Google's in-house Area 120 incubator has just developed a new application called Stack. As a document scanner, it may not sound exciting, but its many AI smarts can help you keep track of your documents which is always important when tax season is around. It's essentially a purpose-built version of Google Lens available for even the best cheap Android phones.

With the app, you can scan a document such as a receipt or a bill, and the app will automatically categorize it and organize it into a "stack." The app will use AI to "read" what's on the document to determine what it is. It can also automatically draw information from the document, such as dates, amounts, and account numbers, adding relevant context to make searching for documents easier. It's similar to some of the new features on Microsoft Lens.

Given the handling of sensitive documents, you can set biometric authentication when opening the app. You also have the option to save documents to Google Drive automatically. Last year's Google Pixel Buds (2020) were a step up from the original model that launched in 2019, finally ditching the wire after most Bluetooth earbuds already transitioned to the "truly wireless" form factor. While the Pixel Buds are among the best wireless earbuds on the market, there's always room for improvement. As it turns out, we may not have to wait too long to see those improvements, thanks to a new FCC filing for a new pair of Pixel Buds.

9to5Google spotted filings for two devices that can likely be attributed to Google. The model numbers, "GPQY2" and "G7YPJ," are similar to that of other Google products, and it's likely that they each represent each separate earbud, given that's how Google filed last year's model. 9to5Google also pointed out that the device dimensions, 27x20x15mm, closely match that of the previous model.

The FCC filing doesn't really give any notable details about the specs. Still, it seems the power output has been increased on this new model, which should help address concerns about connection problems that plagued last year's model. Given Google's tendency to play catch-up with its earbuds, we may finally get active noise canceling, a common feature on the latest earbuds like the Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro.

Clues in the FCC filing indicate that a launch could probably happen sometime this summer, meaning they could arrive alongside the Google Pixel 5a and just in time for the Google Pixel 6 later this year.

According to information gathered by 9to5Google, the upcoming earbuds will be called the Pixel Buds A. It's unclear why Google went with a letter instead of a number, but it could suggest a cheaper alternative, similar to devices like the Google Pixel 4a 5G.

The earbuds will reportedly look nearly identical to the current pair but with a new set of colors. This includes an all-white colorway and a darker green, and it's likely to match the available colors for the rumored Google Pixel 5a. Besides that, the Buds could function and appear more or less the same, although that may disappoint some like our own Ara Wagoner, who hopes to see a few changes to Google's next Pixel Buds.

What you need to know

The FTC's four-year antitrust lawsuit against Qualcomm has come to an end. To recount the events, the FTC initially filed the case back in 2017 alleging that Qualcomm engaged in "anti-competitive supply and licensing terms" that "strangled competition" in the LTE modem segment, with Intel and Samsung backing the trade body's efforts.

Qualcomm's licensing model includes charging a royalty based on the device's overall cost, and with the best Android phones starting at well over $1,000, the FTC wanted the vendor to change its licensing terms. The agency noted that Qualcomm became a monopoly because of its "onerous" licensing practices.

The trade body won the case in 2019, with Judge Lucy H. Koh of the United States District Court for the Northern District of California finding Qualcomm's licensing rates "unreasonably high." That victory was short-lived, however, as Qualcomm was able to get the ruling reversed at the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in August 2020.

On the FTC's website, Chairwoman Rebecca Slaughter noted that there were "significant headwinds facing the Commission," so it is choosing not to take the lawsuit all the way to the Supreme Court:

The FTC's staff did an exceptional job presenting the case, and I continue to believe that the district court's conclusion that Qualcomm violated the antitrust laws was entirely correct and that the court of appeals erred in concluding otherwise.

Now more than ever, the FTC and other law enforcement agencies need to boldly enforce the antitrust laws to guard against abusive behavior by dominant firms, including in high-technology markets and those that involve intellectual property.

Slaughter said that the FTC will continue to monitor "anticompetitive or unfair behavior" in this area, but what that will entail remains to be seen. As for Qualcomm, the chip vendor's general counsel Don Rosenberg had this to say:

Qualcomm got to where it is today by investing tens of billions of dollars in R&D and inventing technologies used by billions of people around the world.

Nokia and HMD Global's Juho Sarvikas announces departure after 15 years android os

Nokia has been through a lot these past 15 years. From its rapid decline from the top to its transition to an exclusive Microsoft partner, only for the mobile business to get swallowed up and quickly dismantled into nothing. Now, as the company continues to build itself back up as a major Android OEM, Nokia is losing one of its most esteemed employees. Juho Sarvikas, the Chief Product Officer and Vice President of North America at HMD Global, has just announced his departure from the company via Twitter:

Juho was a major part of Nokia's business for the past 15 years, starting as a product manager behind the Nokia E61. He eventually helped launch Symbian phones like the Nokia Nuron in North America and led the U.S. launch of Lumia Windows Phone devices with the Nokia Lumia 710. He then went onto Microsoft for a brief period after Nokia's mobile division was acquired, before eventually ending up back at Nokia via HMD Global.

As the Chief Product Officer at HMD Global, he helped reintroduce Nokia to the smartphone industry and is often seen at device launches. Nokia now makes some of the best cheap Android phones on the market, like the Nokia 5.4, thanks to great design and clean software. His departure comes as the company focuses its efforts on reemerging as a top Android OEM. Sarvikas has not stated what he plans to do after he leaves the company next month.

This is the second major executive departure from an Android OEM within the past week, with Kyle Kiang leaving OnePlus this week amid the OnePlus 9 going on sale.

Audio is the most important aspect of any headset, and both of these headsets give great sound. The Arctis leads slightly here for the simple reason that it offers 3D spatial audio with the PS5, whereas the BlackShark's THX Spatial Audio only works on PC. If you want the best audio experience with your PS5, the Arctis is the clear choice.

Both headsets work with companion apps that let you customize the audio, the SteelSeries Engine, and the Razer Synapse, respectively. Synapse's tools are much more in-depth, but the customization isn't available on consoles, whereas the Engine's is.

Neither headset's microphone is spectacular, with the Arctis's being one of our few areas of complaint in our review. The BlackShark's can be detached, which can be useful when you're not going to be using it for a while and don't want it to get in your way.

Arctis 7P vs. BlackShark V2 Pro: Comfort and ease-of-use

Each headset puts a premium on comfort, and both feature breathable fabric cups. The BlackShark is lightweight at 320g, and the Arctis uses a ski goggle design in the headband to keep it from feeling heavy. Either one would be a great choice if you're looking for a lightweight headset to use while gaming for several hours.

Comfort in a headset is not just a matter of how snugly it fits against your head or how cool it keeps your ears. One of the major complaints we had about the BlackShark in our review was that despite the headset being very comfortable to wear on the head, it was much less so around one's neck, the standard resting position for headphones not in active use.

When it comes to using the headset with the console, the Arctis does have one slight downside, in that the USB-C dongle that the user would put on the front-facing port on their console is oversized and blocks the port next to it. It's not a big complaint, but it could be an annoyance if you want to use the other port.

Arctis 7P vs. BlackShark V2 Pro: Price and availability

Price is also a consideration. The Arctis 7P is cheaper at $150, while the BlackShark V2 Pro is $180. It's not a large price difference, but if it comes down to it and you can't decide between the two headsets, it'd be natural to go for the cheaper option.

What puts the Arctis 7P at a disadvantage is that it's not in stock in most places. That means that when you can find it through third-party sellers, its price will be much higher than it would be if you managed to snag it through a retailer. If you can find the BlackShark, you might be able to find it for a lower price than what resellers are requesting for the Arctis.

Both headsets are compatible with a large number of devices outside the PS5, if that's something you need to think about. The BlackShark comes with a 3.5mm cable, which allows it to connect to the Xbox One and Series X/S consoles via the jack in the controller, in addition to the PS4, Nintendo Switch, and PC. This should also allow you to use it with phones, though some of its features might not be available for it. The Arctis, on the other hand, doesn't come with a 3.5mm cord, meaning you can't connect it to the Xbox One or your phone. HOWEVER, its USB-C dongle will work with Android, as well as PC, PS5, and the Switch.

The Arctis 7P is the clear winner, but only by a small margin. Either headset would be a good choice for a PS5 gamer, but the Arctis is cheaper and has an audio advantage with Spatial Audio that works with the console.

S21 Ultra is definitely a better overall value IMO. In terms of root, never bothered with that for many many years now so no can't speak on that. The only reason to get OnePlus 9 Pro is if you prefer oxygen OS so much that you don't like anything else. If not I think S21 Ultra is better. S21 has better overall hardware (especially camera hardware), better updates (monthly security updates...
