Talking UDAY and Smart Meters With UK-Based CyanConnode

The Modi government has been pushing for smart meter adoption by discoms.

From the Editor's Desk: A change of climate means a change in device usage android os

A reminder that everyone around the world has different needs from the same devices.

Of all the things I expected to have to think about with a move from the lush green Pacific Northwest to sunny Southern California, I didn't consider reworking most aspects of how I use my various electronics.

The Bose QC35 headphones I love so much? Well, those don't work so well when I'm wearing sunglasses everywhere I go. And they really don't work when it's anywhere over 70 degrees and my head starts to sweat. I've switched to my Galaxy Buds more frequently, as well as the OnePlus Bullets Wireless V2.

The Pixel 3 XL I use for its simple software and stellar camera? Well, I can't see anything on this subpar screen in the sun ... and it's making me ponder a switch back to the Galaxy S10+ just for the screen brightness and clarity in all lighting conditions. Thankfully I haven't faced any notable issues with damp fingers and fingerprint sensors, though I know many people do.

The beautiful and protective fabric case on my Pixel 3 XL? That's also a problem — sweaty hands and time by the water (pool or ocean, take your pick) aren't great companions for fabric cases. At least it's washable, but it's already looking worse for wear. (Trying to use my phone while eating a messy taco is my fault, though.)

And just to make sure I get another jab in at Apple's laughably useless TouchBar on the MacBook Pro, it's even less useful completely washed out by the sun so you have to cup your hand over it just to see where you're tapping. There's something perfectly ironic about not being able to turn up your screen brightness to use your laptop because you can't see the TouchBar in the first place. A truly terrible idea that I hope Apple abandons.

Having to rethink how I use my gadgets was the last thing on my mind when moving.

Even with all of my time traveling, I took any adaptations I had to make for a new place as being temporary. I changed how I did things, and went right back to the way I knew before without much thought. Now that I'm living somewhere new, I'm forming all sorts of new normals. These are, indeed, some of the most "first world problems" sorts of realizations. But this isn't a complaint, so much as a reminder to keep these experiences in mind when looking at coverage of consumer electronics.

Making all of these little revelations really just points to the fact that we should keep our minds open when it comes to how people use their phones and everything associated with them. Much like Daniel discovered while living in Turkey for over a month, and we see time and time again as we travel around the world to do this awesome job, people in different places have different needs from their devices. We all have access to the same gear, more or less, but how we use it can be dramatically different — and play into our buying decisions in the first place.

We all have access to the same gear, but how we use it can be dramatically different.

To close out, I want to give a huge shoutout to our own Rene Ritchie for his very timely and insightful take on the Jony Ive departure this week. (Also available in video form!) Few people have the breadth and depth of knowledge of Apple and Ive that Rene do. You can find flaws with some of Apple's designs over the last few decades, but you can't say that Ive didn't have a massive impact on how the entire industry designed its products while he was at Apple — seeing him make a move will undoubtedly have some kind of effect on companies other than just Apple.

Hope all of you in the U.S. celebrating July 4 — or Canada Day, for our friends to the north — have a safe and fun extended weekend. I know I will!

-Andrew

This $28 smart charging cable knows when your phone is fully charged android os

Everyone uses their phone, but for some of us, our phones are our lifeline because they allow us to respond to urgent business calls and emails. Thus, many of us obsessively maintain a full charge on our phone. However, our phones aren’t meant to be at 100% battery all day, and maintaining a maximum charge is detrimental to their long-term battery life. That’s why you need a charging cable that will prolong your battery health, and this $28 Charby Sense cable fits the bill.

The Charby Sense is a smart charging cable that can detect when your phone is at a full charge or not. Once you reach a full charge, the Charby Sense will automatically stop charging to prolong your phone’s battery life. Additionally, the Charby Sense acts as a quick charger when connected to your laptop; by using Qualcomm QC 3.0, you can charge your phone twice as fast with the click of a button, and the Charby Sense’s LED indicator will let you know when the quick charge is enabled. Finally, the Charby Sense features durable cable sleeving to ensure a longer lifespan than your standard rubber and plastic cables.

Believe it or not, keeping your phone fully charged is counterintuitive to its overall battery health, but the Charby Sense will help you maintain your phone's optimal battery life without impacting its longevity for just $28, or 28% off.

Google preps Fast Share, an AirDrop-like replacement for Android Beam android os

Fast Share is up and working for a few users so far.

What you need to know

  • Google appears to have a working replacement for Android Beam that's almost ready for launch.
  • The new system is somewhat similar to AirDrop and the current Nearby feature.
  • System seems to be 1-to-1 transfer only at the moment, but looks compatible with Android phones, Chromebooks, iPhones, and even Smartwatches.

Android Beam is on its way out with Android Q, that is if you remember that was even still a thing. I maybe had it work twice in my 7 years with Android, so I'm not crying over its departure, but its replacement could be very interesting — or open up Android users to the shenanigans iPhone users have been subjected to for years with AirDrop.

The new system is called Fast Share, and the good folks at 9to5Google got it working on a Google Pixel 3 XL so that we all could see how it works in the wild. Fast Share appears in the Share menu — using the same icon Nearby does — and then opens up a full-screen menu for sending. You need to name your device the first time you use it, and then you can attempt to send it to other devices detected close to you. If you look at the device list in the second screenshot, this feature does not seem limited to Android phones, as an iPhone, Chromebook and smartwatch are listed as being nearby.

Once you select your recipient and send the file or photo, you'll get one last look at what you're sending and then a progress bar. Meanwhile on the recipient's phone, you'll get the chance to accept or reject the file based on the name of the device you're getting it from, with the ability to accept or reject straight from the notification shade if you're busy. If this works well, you'll likely end up using it with family members or close friends, which you can give "Preferred Visibility" so that their devices come up first when sending.

9to5 believed this new feature is tied to Google Play Services rather than Android Q, so be on the lookout for it on your own device. You'll be able to find it (if you have it) in Settings > Google > Fast Share. I don't see it on my devices yet, but I can only hope that once I do it'll make it easier to share photos during family trips or between my phone and Chromebook while working on how-tos.

Charge on the go! Here are the best car chargers available android os

Whether you're making an all-day road trip or just your normal half-hour commute, in the car is the perfect place to top up during your drive. After all, your phone should be stationary in a car mount for Android Auto or stowed away so you're not tempted to use it while driving. Car chargers come in many styles and shapes, but with the advent of USB-C Power Delivery charging, we have a widely used standard that can be used for charging a phone or even laptops off the same port. Here are the best chargers to replenish your battery on the road.

Futureproof charging

Anker 49.5W PowerDrive Speed+ 2 Car Adapter

Staff pick

This charger features a 30W USB-C Power Delivery port that can charge your Chromebook decently or charge most phones at top speed, and a USB-A port with Anker's PowerIQ to charge everything else. It's safe to say this car charger will likely last longer than your current car.

$30 at Amazon

Reliable wireless charging

iOttie Easy One-Touch 4 QI Wireless Charging Mount

If you have a phone with Qi wireless charging, having a Qi charger in your car is awesome since you don't have to hassle with wires every time you get in or out. iOttie's Qi charging mount is the most popular and reliable model around.

$50 at Amazon

MOAR POWER

Maxboost 63W Universal Car Charger

This charger has a large footprint and even larger capacity. The USB-C port here can charge at 45W — top speed for most Chromebooks and a good rate for Macbooks, too — and the USB-A port is Qualcomm QC 3.0. Charge it all and charge it all quickly.

$25 at Amazon

Set and forget

AUKEY CC-Y12 18W PD Car Charger

Plugin, shut the cover, and forget this charger is there until you need its 18W USB-C port to recharge your phone in a hurry. This style is harder to extract, but that's because it's made to sit basically flush inside your car's charger port.

$17 at Amazon

Great for Samsung users

RAVPower Dual Quick Charge 3.0 USB Port Car Charger

If your family uses Samsung phones, Qualcomm Quick Charge is the fast charging method you'll be relying on more than USB-C Power Delivery, and this affordable charger has not one but two QC 3.0 ports for you and your partner/friend/child/rideshare passenger to use.

$12 at Amazon

Great speed, better price

Aukey 27W USB-C PD Car Charger

The USB-C port charges at up to 27W, and the USB-A port charges at a respectable 5V/2.4A, making this charger powerful but still mostly compact. It's not as small as AUKEY's CC-Y12, but that means it's easier to pull out if you frequently swap vehicles.

$20 at Amazon

Power Delivery is awesome

USB-C Power Delivery is five kinds of awesome, with the best being that it can charge a wider variety of devices at a wider range of speeds. If you want to charge a laptop in your car — hey, it happens more often than you'd think — then you can go overboard with the Maxboost 63W Universal Car Charger and its 45W PD output, but if you'd rather stick with a more well-known brand, Anker's got you covered with the PowerDrive Speed+ 2 with its 30W PD output. Make sure you grab a good USB-C cable to use them with!

If your phone has Qi charging, you should really consider grabbing a Qi car charger. Not having to plug and unplug every single time you get in the car is nice, especially during an afternoon of errands. There are other Qi charging mounts out there, but iOttie's is available in three modes: a dash mount, a vent mount and a CD slot mount, so you can grab the type that's best for you. If you live in a warm locale, I definitely suggest the vent model so that your AC can help keep things cool in the summer since Qi charging tends to gather a little heat.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 vs. Galaxy Tab S5e: Which should you buy? android os

Here at AC, we continuously strive to be your best source for Android. Whether it be phones, tablets, smartwatches, or anything else in between, we're here to help you find, buy, and use the tech of your dreams.

Flagship tablet

Samsung Galaxy Tab S4

From $650 at Amazon

Pros

  • Gorgeous AMOLED display
  • Longer battery life
  • Comes with an S Pen
  • Optional LTE model

Cons

  • Less RAM
  • More expensive

It may not be the newest tablet in Samsung's lineup these days, but the Galaxy Tab S4 is still the most powerful. With longer battery life, included S Pen, iris scanning, and so much more, the Galaxy Tab S4 is ready for all your tasks — whether they're for work or play.

Best for less

Samsung Galaxy Tab S5e

$400 at Amazon

Pros

  • Smaller bezels
  • Up to 6GB RAM
  • Weighs less
  • More affordable

Cons

  • No S Pen
  • Only available with Wi-Fi

Can't afford the Tab S4 but still want a tablet that'll be able to keep up with you? The Galaxy Tab S5e is a great option. Despite the lower price tag, you still get an AMOLED display, lightweight design, and an identical software experience. That said, you miss out on the S Pen and more powerful internals.

With the Galaxy Tab S4 and S5e, you have two great tablet options depending on what you're in the market for. If you want an ultra-premium tablet with great internals, lots of expanded capabilities with an included S Pen, and the option to have on-device LTE, the Tab S4 brings a lot to the table. With that said, if you don't need an S Pen or LTE, you can save $250 and get the Galaxy Tab S5e. It offers a very similar experience, even more RAM, and supports more expandable storage at the expense of less battery life.

What the Galaxy Tab S4 does better

Specs-wise, the Galaxy Tab S4 and S5e have a lot in common. In fact, at first glance, you might be confused as to why anyone would spend an extra $250 for the S4 when the S5e matches it in so many ways.

Perhaps the biggest advantage of the Tab S4 is its included S Pen. The S Pen opens up an entire world of possibilities you won't find with the Galaxy Tab S5e, and for some people, it'll be reason enough to go for the S4 over it.

Some of the highlights of having the S Pen include being able to quickly create handwritten notes, draw/doodle, and simply having a more precise way to interact with the touchscreen. We all know how great the S Pen is on devices like the Galaxy Note 9, and with an even bigger canvas to work with on the Tab S4, it's that much better.

You also get the added benefit of a larger battery, which according to Samsung allows for up to 2 hours of additional use of video playback. Your milage will certainly vary depending on what you're using your tablet for, but as a general rule, expect to get a bit more time in between charges with the Tab S4.

Lastly, it's worth giving the Tab S4 some praise for its optional LTE model (available for Verizon, Sprint, and AT&T) which allows you to stay connected even when Wi-Fi isn't nearby, as well as a docking station accessory that can essentially turn it into a makeshift smart display.

Why you should save your money and get the Tab S5e

Here's the thing though. If you don't need the S Pen, LTE, and are fine with slighty less battery endurance, the Galaxy Tab S5e is essentially the same tablet with a price tag that's $250 less.

Its Snapdragon 670 processor is just as snappy as the older 835 chipset in the S4, it's rocking the exact same Super AMOLED display, its camera combo is identical, and both tablets support Samsung DeX with an optional keyboard accessory to help you stay productive while on the go.

In fact, the Galaxy Tab S5e even has a few key advantages over the S4. In regards to its security, it uses a traditional fingerprint sensor and face unlock which a lot of people will likely prefer over the Tab S4's iris scanning system. You can also configure the S5e with 2GB of extra RAM, and while its maximum base storage is less than the Tab S4, it supports a larger amount of expandable storage with its microSD card.

A quick note on security

Security authentication, such as fingerprint sensors and face unlock, is expected on just about every new device we buy these days. On the Galaxy Tab S4 and S5e, this is handled very differently between the two devices.

On the Galaxy Tab S4, you'll rely on Samsung's iris scanning technology to securely unlock the device and log you into all of your apps. It's a bit more convenient than a fingerprint sensor if you're already looking at the tablet, and while it isn't the fastest around, it is quite secure.

As for the Tab S5e, you'll rely primarly on the side-mounted fingerprint sensor for all of your authentication needs. However, for quickly unlocking the tablet, there's also a less-secure face unlock feature that you can use.

It's all based on your wants and needs

As with so many of these comparisons, the tablet you should buy ultimately comes down to your personal preferneces.

Both of these gadgets have a lot in common, but if you want the expanded capabilities of the S Pen, value having LTE connectivity, and want the best battery life possible, the Galaxy Tab S4 will be worth the extra money.

Then again, if you aren't too concerned with those features and just want a rock solid tablet for general day-to-day use, you might as well save yourself some cash and pick up the Galaxy Tab S5e.

Flagship tablet

Samsung Galaxy Tab S4

A powerful tablet that's built to do anything.

$650 at Amazon

With the Galaxy Tab S4, the only thing that limits what you can do with it is your imagination. Along with a premium design and powerful specs, it has a couple of big advantages over the Tab S5e thanks to its included S Pen, an optional LTE model, and can last longer in between charges thanks to bigger battery.

Best for less

Galaxy Tab S5e

A similar experience for $250 less.

$400 at Amazon

As great as the Tab S4 is, it's not the best fit for everyone. If you want to spend less money and get a very similar experience, the Tab S5e is the way to go. It has the same great AMOLED display, supports more RAM, and slimmer screen bezels while retaining a fingerprint sensor. If you don't need an S Pen or LTE, this might be the better choice.

Great accessories for your new tablet

Galaxy Tab S4 Book Cover Keyboard

$150 at Samsung

If you decide to get the Galaxy Tab S4, you'll definitely want to also pick up its Book Cover Keyboard. It simultaneously protects the tablet while also giving you a fantastic typing experience.

DeX Cable

$24 at Samsung

Whether you buy the Tab S4 or S5e, this DeX Cable allows both to be plugged into a computer monitor to launch a Windows-like desktop experience for getting serious work done.

RAVPower 32,000 mAh Batter Pack

From $74 at Amazon

Should you find yourself needing more battery while on the go, this 32,000 battery pack from RAVPower provides a ton of extra juice in a relatively slim and compact package.

Snapdragon 855 certified as secure zone for payments, encryption and eSIM android os

Phone makers can utilize the new security capabilities right away.

What you need to know

  • Snapdragon 855 SoC is now EAL-4+ certified as a secure zone for encryption, payments, eSIM and more.
  • Companies can now eliminate dedicated security chips from phone, simplify design and reduce costs.
  • Certification retroactively applies to all Snapdragon 855 devices.

Qualcomm's current top-end SoC (system on chip), the Snapdragon 855, has received Common Criteria EAL-4+ certification, making it the first SoC to be recognized as offering smart card-level security. The certification allows manufacturers to use the Snapdragon 855 as the only secure storage area for applications such as payment IDs, encryption keys and eSIM management, removing the need for a a separate security chip.

Phone makers are always looking for ways to simplify the chip layout and internal designs.

Prior to this sort of certification, phone makers would need to include a separate security chip in the phone to act as a trusted and secure area for holding sensitive data such as payment IDs and encryption keys, as well as comply with Google's most stringent security requirements in Gatekeeper and StrongBox. The possibilities expand beyond those current use-cases as well. The Snapdragon 855 can now theoretically be used as a secure storage container for applications like transit passes, Trusted Platform Modules (TPM), crypto wallets and more.

Now with this certification, companies can theoretically just use the Snapdragon 855 SoC and not have to include any separate chip purely for security reasons. That's saves the company money on the overall build of materials, but also frees up just a little bit of space in the phone — and any amount of complexity that can be removed from the internal design of a phone is a win. And while this isn't a huge win for devices that already shipped with the 855 and a separate security chip (though the certification does apply retroactively), it's a huge deal for new 855 devices and future phones running on the next-generation Snapdragon 800-series chip that will presumably go through the same certification again.

Press release:

Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Becomes First Mobile SoC to Receive Smart Card Equivalent Security Certification

—Secure Processing Unit can run High Assurance Applications Previously Only Performed by External Security Chips, Saving OEMs Bill of Materials Cost—

SAN DIEGO — June 25, 2019 — Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., a subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ: QCOM), announced the Qualcomm® Secure Processing Unit, an on- die secure element recently launched as part of the Qualcomm® SnapdragonTM 855 Mobile Platform, has received Common Criteria EAL-4+ security certification, the gold standard for smart card hardware security assurance and testing. The internationally recognized certification makes the Snapdragon 855 the first mobile SoC (System on Chip) to attain smart card levels of security assurance. The integrated Qualcomm Secure Processing Unit enables Qualcomm Technologies' OEM customers to save on Bill of Materials (BOM) cost without sacrificing security and offers the performance and power improvements that come with integration into the leading process node.

Examples of current Qualcomm Secure Processing Unit use cases include Android Strongbox Keymaster and Gatekeeper. On demonstration at Qualcomm Technologies' exhibit at MWC Shanghai this week is another example of the certified Qualcomm Secure Processing Unit's capabilities: an integrated SIM (iSIM) demo by Qualcomm Technologies and Gemalto, a Thales company. In the future, capabilities like offline payment, trusted platform module (TPM) functions, transit, electronic ID, and crypto wallets will be possible, all without the need of a discrete security chip.

"Completing the EAL-4+ security certification is a major milestone in our journey to bring smart card levels of security to our Snapdragon customers and users. Use cases that previously required separate security chips will now be possible fully integrated in Snapdragon 855 powered devices," said Jesse Seed, senior director, product management, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. "This certification is a testament to the industry firsts that Snapdragon 855 brings to market and Qualcomm Technologies' continued leadership in embedded security."

The certification of the Qualcomm Secure Processing Unit has been approved by BSI (Bundesamt für Sicherheit in der Informationstechnik), the German Federal Office for Information Security. BSI's certification program is known to be very rigorous and globally recognized.

"As the national certification authority, the BSI has shown with this certification that Common Criteria (ISO/IEC 15408) is the first choice to ensure high security for complex products like SoCs. The certification, which uses international and transparent standards, is an important contribution to strengthen the users' confidence in the security of IT products. Information security is a prerequisite for a successful digitization," said Arne Schönbohm, president, German Federal Office for Information Security.

"Improving security is a top priority for all of our platform releases," said Dave Kleidermacher, head of Android security and privacy, Google. "Qualcomm Secure Processing Unit makes it possible for our OEMs to meet the stringent Android StrongBox requirements, and we are looking forward to seeing how partners implement it to take advantage of key StrongBox features, such as improvements to credential and payment security."

"We are committed to advanced built-in security with the Qualcomm Secure Processing Unit for accelerating the adoption of embedded SIM (eSIM)-based cellular connectivity among a wide variety of consumer connected devices," said Jean-Francois Rubon, director of strategy, mobile communications solutions, Thales.

"This innovation, based on the GSMA global eSIM specification, will be a great enabler for all sorts of exciting products across all markets," said Jean-Christophe Tisseuil, head of SIM, GSMA. "Industry recognized assurance of the security within this work is critical and we congratulate Qualcomm Technologies on achieving this significant level of certification in an innovative product."

Already in production, Snapdragon 855 with the Qualcomm Secure Processing Unit offers improved power and performance characteristics, in addition to industry-leading security features. It has launched in flagship devices globally and is the industry's first commercial mobile platform supporting multi-gigabit 5G, on-device AI and immersive extended reality (XR) collectively, ushering in a new decade of revolutionary mobile devices.

Target Deal Days take on Amazon's Prime Day with awesome discounts android os

Bullseye.

The biggest news of the summer is out! Amazon's Prime Day is coming July 15. Sure, that is going to be a huge event for Amazon, but you're crazy if you think the competition isn't getting in on the fun, too. Target has just announced Target Deal Days, which will feature thousands of deals also on July 15 and July 16! What a complete coincidence!

The Deals Are A-Comin'

Target Deal Days

Target promises hundreds of thousands of price drops, and the real key here is all the deals on Target's exclusive brands. Sales you won't find anywhere else and don't usually see even at Target.

Various Prices

See at Target

Target's deals will include discounts on national brands but also on Target's exclusive brands, including rare price drops on goods in the home and apparel categories. If you're interested in apparel, Target's exclusive brands include A New Day, Joy Lab, C9 (Champion), and Universal Tread, among others. For kids, there's Cat and Jack. In the home category, you'll want to keep an eye on Opal House, Threshold, and Made by Design. The latter is particularly important for college kids and anyone else going back to school in the fall. In tech, beyond the national brands, you can also look out for exclusive deals from Target's brand HeyDay.

Expect to see a lot of price drops on toys, too. Target promises hundreds of thousands of items will be on sale and there will be new deals each day. Plus, if you have a Target REDcard, you'll still be able to use it to get 5% off during the entire event along with free shipping. Everyone else can get free two-day shipping on orders of $35 or more.

If you're ordering online, Target will have same-day delivery and in-store pickup options for those of you who want your products right away. Use the Target app or visit Target.com and order your stuff there. You can even use Target's food delivery service Shipt to have things delivered within hours. If you visit a store but don't want to leave your car, use the Drive Up service so Target employees can bring your order right out to the parking lot.

While our Thrifter team will be focusing a lot on Prime Day, we'll definitely be covering Target's big event as well. Keep an eye on our Prime Day 2019 hub and be sure to follow us on Twitter as we get closer and closer.

The OnePlus 7 may look the same, but it's all-new where it counts android os

The OnePlus 7 delivers the upgrades that matter in a familiar design.

The OnePlus 7 is an interesting device. OnePlus is essentially reusing the same design as last year's OnePlus 6T and upgrading the internal hardware for 2019. It's a clever move by the company: the likes of POCO F1 and ASUS ZenFone 5z have challenged OnePlus' dominance in the value flagship space last year, and with the company aiming higher with the OnePlus 7 Pro, it needed a device that can take on Xiaomi, ASUS, and Honor.

That's where the OnePlus 7 slots in. It doesn't matter that the device is using the same design and most of the same internal components as the 6T, because it delivers the upgrades that users actually care about. There's a Snapdragon 855 under the hood, and it has the same 478MP Sony IMX 586 camera sensor as most devices in this category.

To that effect, I'm not going to focus on what you miss out from the OnePlus 7 Pro, but what you gain with the new additions. Here's why you should care about the OnePlus 7.

OnePlus 7

₹32,999 at Amazon India

£499 at OnePlus UK

Familiar design, great new hardware.

The OnePlus 7 has three key upgrades that allow it to stand out in the value flagship space in 2019: the Snapdragon 855 chipset, stereo speakers, and 48MP Sony IMX 586 camera. The software experience continues to be great, and the battery life is excellent. If you're not keen on the 90Hz display on the OnePlus 7 Pro, the OnePlus 7 is a great way to save a couple of hundred dollars.

The Good

  • Snapdragon 855 chipset
  • Stereo sound
  • Excellent battery life
  • Clean software with OxygenOS

The Bad

  • Camera doesn't hold up in low-light
  • No water resistance
  • No 3.5mm jack
  • No wireless charging

OnePlus 7 Hardware

I'm not going to focus a lot on the design side of things with the OnePlus 7, because the phone has the same chassis as the OnePlus 6T. It has the same curves at the back, the same glossy finish that makes it prone to smudges, and the same great in-hand feel. If anything, I prefer this design to the OnePlus 7 Pro as it's not as unweildy.

The glass back is protected by a layer of Gorilla Glass 5, but you're still better off buying a case to protect the device. The OnePlus 7 is available in a Mirror Gray color option in most markets around the world, but there's a gorgeous red option in China and India. The red variant makes the phone stand out, but seeing as how you'll need to use a case with the device, you can get the same effect by picking up OnePlus' red silicone case.

The OnePlus 7 has the same design and display as the 6T, but that's not a bad thing.

On the subject of change (or lack thereof), the OnePlus 7 uses the same 6.41-inch Optic AMOLED panel as its predecessor. That's not necessarily a bad thing, as the display is still one of the best in this category. You get vibrant colors and excellent saturation, and I didn't face any problems with sunlight legibility.

There's also the same waterdrop cutout at the top of the display, but it isn't as distracting. The one key change on the design side of things is the wider slit at the top of the screen, which now houses the secondary speaker. Stereo sound makes a huge difference, and the phone gets sufficiently loud without losing any of the detail. The addition of stereo sound is particularly great for gaming, and the HDR10 support makes the OnePlus 7 a great device for consuming media on the go.

Another major addition on the OnePlus 7 is the Snapdragon 855 chipset. Qualcomm's 7nm platform delivers sizable improvements from last year, and the result is that the OnePlus 7 absolutely blazes through everyday tasks. I never saw a slowdown or lag in the two weeks I used the phone, and right now this is one of the fastest phones in the market.

Like its predecessors, the OnePlus 7 is one of the fastest phones in the market today.

Like the OnePlus 7 Pro, the standard OnePlus 7 comes with UFS 3.0 storage. UFS 3.0 delivers much better bandwidth, but this is more about OnePlus getting to say that it was first to do so. You're not going to notice any difference between a UFS 2.1 module and UFS 3.0 — no matter how hard you're pushing the phone. The base variant still comes with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, and there's also an 8GB/256GB model.

The OnePlus 7 retains the same in-display optical fingerprint module as the 6T, but because of optimizations on the software front, it fared much better in day-to-day usage. It's still not quite as fast as capacitive sensors, but it is faster and more reliable than most phones with the same optical module.

OnePlus is also using the same haptic engine as the 6T, which is a real shame because the one on the OnePlus 7 Pro is significantly better. You also lose out on 30W wired charging, with the OnePlus 7 featuring the same 20W charging as the 6T. It even has the same Dash Charge branding, so that should give you an indication as to how similar the device is to the 6T.

As for battery life itself, I got a day's worth of use consistently from the 3700mAh battery. I routinely saw over six hours of screen-on-time, and there was never an instance where the battery level fell below 10% before the end of the day.

Now onto the things that you don't get on the OnePlus 7: there's no water resistance or wireless charging, and no 3.5mm jack. OnePlus is positioning the device in the value flagship space, and most devices in this category don't have an IP rating either.

OnePlus 7 Software

There's little to talk about when it comes to the software side of things. OxygenOS continues to be the best implementation from a third-party manufacturer, and you get a load of useful features combined with an interface that's devoid of any overt customization. That leads to a user experience that's immensely satisfying, and OxygenOS is just about as fluid as things get on Android. You're not going to see any lag anywhere, and OnePlus has done a magnificent job optimizing the software for the hardware.

OxygenOS is still the best third-party skin on Android, and you get all the new features from the OnePlus 7 Pro.

OnePlus is also rolling out all the new features that debuted on the OnePlus 7 Pro over to the standard model. That includes Zen Mode, which lets you unplug by cutting off access to your phone for 20 minutes. When the mode is engaged, all you'll be able to do is take photos with the camera and make emergency calls. The feature is designed to tackle phone addiction, and it does a good job addressing that.

Another useful addition is a native screen recorder that lets you record your own audio as well as video. There's also a new screenshot editor, and OnePlus has turned things up on the gaming front with a new Fnatic mode. It's like gaming mode, but with more aggressive background activity management to give you the best performance while gaming.

Here are all the new features in OxygenOS 9.5

OnePlus is also rolling out a slate of India-exclusive features in OxygenOS. The features will be going live in the coming weeks, but customers in the country will get a new SMS app with spam filtering, and a new dialer that does the same for calls. There's also a new Work-Life Balance feature that lets you manage your work and home profiles better.

For now, what you need to know is that the OnePlus 7 delivers the same great software experience that has made the company stand out in this category over the last two years, with a little extra for Indian customers.

OnePlus 7 Camera

The main highlight of the OnePlus 7 is the 48MP primary camera at the back — the same as the OnePlus 7 Pro. The Sony IMX 586 has been a mainstay on several phones in this category in 2019, and it is one of the best imaging modules around.

The OnePlus 7 uses pixel binning to produce 12MP shots from the sensor, and there's also a 5MP secondary sensor for portrait shots. You're missing out on the wide-angle and telephotos modules from the OnePlus 7 Pro, but it's not a huge omission.

Camera on the OnePlus 7 is a mixed bag. You do get a few decent shots now and again — particularly in daylight conditions — but it is inconsistent. The issues are highlighted even more in low-light scenarios, with colors coming out muddy and lot of noise showing up in shots. That said, the Sony IMX 586 sensor itself isn't at fault here; as we've seen on the likes of the Mi 9, it can take excellent photos in any lighting conditions.

The problem is with the camera tuning, and OnePlus has lagged behind in this area for some time now. That said, the company is working to address these issues following feedback from the community, and OxygenOS 9.5.5 does make things better.

Overall though, it is an improvement from the 6T, and that's what matters at the end of the day.

OnePlus 7 Should you buy it?

If you already have the OnePlus 6 or 6T, it makes little sense to get the OnePlus 7. The device is aimed at users that are using the OnePlus 5/5T or older, or making the switch from another manufacturer.

With the OnePlus 7, you're getting a device that offers great value. The internal hardware is the latest you'll find, and the display is still going strong in 2019. The battery life is much better than what you get on the beefier OnePlus 7 Pro, and thankfully the software experience is unchanged. The camera needs some fine-tuning, but the sensor itself is one of the best around.

OnePlus saves on manufacturing costs by reusing the 6T design, and those savings are passed onto customers.

By retaining the same design and a lot of the internal components as the 6T, OnePlus is able to save on manufacturing costs, and it is passing some of those savings down to customers in a few markets. The phone itself isn't going on sale in all regions where OnePlus sells devices — it isn't coming to the U.S. OnePlus is targeting India as the main market for the device, and that makes sense because over 40% of the brand's global sales come from India. It needs a strong value flagship to take on Xiaomi and other Chinese brands in the country, and the OnePlus 7 manages to do just that.

4 out of 5

That said, the OnePlus 7 doesn't have the same value proposition in all global markets. In the UK, for instance, there's a £150 ($190) difference between the OnePlus 7 and the beefier OnePlus 7 Pro, whereas in India, there's a ₹16,000 ($250) difference between the two models.

The OnePlus 7 Pro has a stunning 90Hz display, a notchless design, and 30W wired charging. The device also has a wide-angle lens and telephoto shooter, but they don't really offer a tangible benefit. It's up to you to decide if those features are worth $200.

If you're in India, the OnePlus 7 is an obvious choice. OnePlus continues to be very aggressive in the country, and the sheer combination of features on offer combined with the fluidity of OxygenOS make it the phone to beat in the affordable flagship space. You still get to save around $200 in other markets, and if you're not interested in the 90Hz display, the OnePlus 7 is a smart purchase.

At the end of the day, the OnePlus 7 delivers on the same promises as earlier OnePlus devices. The internal hardware has been upgraded for 2019, and the 48MP camera at the back holds a lot of promise — provided it receives further updates. The battery life is excellent, the software is about the best you'll find on Android, and like previous years, you're getting great value. You can't ask for much more.
